Accurately recording your mileage and increasing it gradually and consistently is ever so important for a marathon runner. I am often asked how I keep track of my mileage and how I train so well even though my coach is in another State.
There is only one answer…Garmin!
I have no idea how we did it before the Garmin arrived. We’d run along a trail to a particular tree, loop around it at call it 8km or average out pace across a weekly set of running sessions. This method, is easy to assess each week if you run exactly the same routes, but if you want to mix it up a bit, the challenge of knowing you haven’t overstepped the mileage increase rules is a tough one.
I wear my Garmin for all my training sessions. It records every run I do, the pace the time of day, the weather, the elevation and I can log against each run the shoes I wear and whether I run by myself or with my husband. We then download the data onto the computer and send Dick (coach) all our data for each session.
He can then assess each session and tweak the program if need be. There’s no guess work as to how many kms we’ve done and unless we strap the garmin to a dog and let him run around the park while we have a coffee, we really can’t get out of training! LOL!
