I was recently asked in an Interview, post CW Games, whether I have received new recognition as part of winning the bronze medal. For me, running is not about becoming famous or receiving accolades. I run for 3 reasons:
1. I love getting the best out of myself.
2. I love to be fit and healthy.
3. I know I can have an impact on women and girls in sport (men too hopefully!).
I hope I can share my experiences with others and be remembered in Sport for the positive impact I make through example. That’s all the recognition I need.
When I returned from the Games a colleague at IBM sent me a lovely presentation and speech prepared by an inspiring young lady at Stella Maris P.S named Sophie Whittaker. Each student prepared a comprehensive report and presentation on Australia’s Commonwealth Games athletes and I was lucky to be thought of by Sophie, even before I won the medal. Thank you Sophie for making my day!
This report brought a very big smile to my face and I so very much wanted to share a quote from her report:
“Lisa Weightman has taught me that you can have a big amazing dream and although you might think it’s unachievable with persistence you can achieve it. So someone with a positive attitude and a will to never give up can do anything, all you have to do is try. Lisa is that kind of person that keeps trying and never gives up. She has made me think that I can do lots of things even something as great as hers just if I keep trying.”
In life and in sport, if I can inspire people to be the best they can be, then I have achieved exactly what I wanted to achieve!
